Ernest Race Penguin Donkey

  • A 1960's Penguin Donkey Mark II side table and storage unit, designed by Ernest Race for Isokon (GB).

This iconic table serves as a multifunctional unit with combined storage on both sides for books and magazines.

Ernest Race was one of the most challenging advocates of mid-century British design. During the height of his success, from 1945-1955, he produced immensely versatile designs from the most unusual materials.

Race's style was a unique combination of objective problem solving with an awareness of the mood of the moment, influenced by his training as an interior designer, in comparison to his contemporaries who looked to post-war America for inspiration.

The Penguin Donkey Mark II was designed in 1963 after Jack Pritchard asked Ernest Race to redesign the original 1930s Egon Riss Donkey I design, with a redesigned flat top to allow it to be also used as a side table.

    Label to underside.
