Orange LAR Armchair by Charles & Ray Eames
An original 1953 historically significant Eames chair in orange, displaying many thick fibres that are only seen on the earlier production models. Base, back and arms are supported on an original, rarely seen, black painted bent 'cats cradle' wire base.
Examples of this chair can be seen in many significant museum collections. Charles Eames originally designed it not only as a functional chair, but also as a system of chairs. There were many different bases designed to fit this top, and several different tops designed to fit the base. This is the important historical part of the design process for the Eameses; not only were they designing a chair for comfort, but they were designing the chair for production. It was originally manufactured by the Zenith Plastics Company in California and first went into production in about 1950. It has been in production ever since.
This version carries some of the hallmarks of the original concept and for this reason is highly collectable.
